Science Fiction as a discovery of the future and place of the unknown. Reflecting on the inter-connectedness of the human and non-human artists from visual arts, theatre and dance discuss the role of otherness and the uncanny in their work.
Stewart Laing
Stewart Laing is a theatre and opera director. He is currently Associate Director at National Theatre of Scotland and is working on a new project for the company, Them!, due to open at Tramway in June 2019. Recent projects include Strindberg’s Creditors for the Lyceum in Edinburgh, and David Sawer’s new opera, The Skating Rink at Garsington Opera. Stewart is also Artistic Director of Untitled Projects, which he formed in 1998
Sarah Forrest
Sarah Forrest (b. 1981 Dundee) is an artist based in Glasgow who works across film, installation, text and sound. Her practice weaves together elements of theory, fiction and philosophy to produce narrative driven works that playfully explore perceptions both by and of the self. She received her MFA from Glasgow School of Art in 2010. Solo exhibitions include: Sarah Forrest: April, LUX, London (2018); Again, it objects, Kunstraum Dusseldorf, Germany (2016); I Left it on Page 32, Supplement, London (2014); Two Solo Shows: Sarah Forrest and Mounira Al Sohl, CCA, Glasgow (2013). Recent group exhibitions include: Maintenant et Encore (with Linda Sanchez), 3 Bis F, Aix-en-Provence, France; Against Time, co-curated by Paula Zambrano and Sarah Strang for Glasgow International, Civic Room, Glasgow; Cabinet Interventions, Glasgow International, Pollok House, Glasgow (all 2018). She was recipient of the 2017/18 Margaret Tait Award.
Mikko Gaestel
Mikko Gaestel is a visual artist and filmmaker living in Berlin. He studied at University of the Arts Berlin and Iceland Academy of the Arts Reykjavik, finishing with a Meisterschüler degree. His works have been exhibited at institutions including Goethe Institute New York, Bremerhaven Art Museum, Museum of Contemporary Art Helsinki, Future Gallery Berlin and Dumbo Arts Center New York. His documentary feature debut »The Great Fortune« won the Grand Prize at Belgrade Documentary Film Festival 2016.
Colette Sadler
Born in Glasgow she trained in Classical Ballet followed by completing a BA (Hons) at the Laban centre, London. She worked as a dancer for choreographers including , Liz Aggiss/Bilie Cowie, Jeremy James Vicente Saez and Gary Stevens amongst others. In 2002 she initiated Stammer productions in Glasgow to support her ongoing research, creation and artistic production in the field of choreography and performance. Since 2006 Sadler’s works have been shown in numerous theatre and gallery contexts Internationally including at Performatik festival Kaai theatre Brussels, ImpulsTanz Vienna, South Bank Centre London, TRAMWAY, Centraal Museum Utrecht , Nottingham Contemporary (alongside the British Art Show) Les Lattitudes Contemporains France and Dusseldorf Visual arts Quadriennale. In 2018 she made the video Installation work BODY A with Mikko Gaestel presented at Art Night London.
Her recent dance work TEMPORARY STORE premiered Feb 2019 at Sophiensæle Berlin. Her commission work for Scottish Dance Theatre RITUALIA will tour the UK and Latin America in 2019 including as part of the British Council Showcase in Edinburgh alongside her 2017 work “Learning from the future”. In 2019 she curated two editions of Present Futures in Berlin and Glasgow respectively.
The talk will be followed by a screening of “Again it objects” by Sarah Forrest
